Summary and explanation
Mycoplasma pneumonia is an important etiologic agent of community-acquired infections of the upper and lower respiratory tract in children and adults, which is primarily atypical pneumonia. M. pneumoniae has been reported as the cause of 25-30% of all cases of community acquired pneumonia (CAP), this pathogen has also been associated with non-respiratory diseases such as meningitis, encephalitis, pancreatitis or arthritis.

But the diagnosis of infection by this microorganism is difficult because the culture is specific but slow (it may take 3 weeks to obtain results) and insensitive, so the diagnosis is generally based on serological methods.
